The first two training camps of 2024

2024 – The year of change

Change is …inevitable, a process, part of growing, frightening, uncomfortable or exciting… It all depends on the perspective and readiness to embrace it.

CHANGE was a must for the GBT Mongoose this year. It is time to professionalise our club and share more widely what we believe is vital for the prosperity of our sport. Charity starts at home! So, we are engaging in a change process that will see players and management making their vision a reality by working hard for them, being ready to sacrifice and spending time to improve our individual and collective performance. This is true for management and players alike. Those who put in the work will be supported and see the change happening in and around them. We are ready to embrace suggestions that help us improve our journey and reach its destiny. For improvements to happen, we have to do concrete steps. For us it means we put several camps and change strategies in place – some are pleasant, and others may be a bit uncomfortable. Growth starts when moving out of our comfort zones.

Therefore, every growth includes growth pains. Blisters and muscle aches strengthen the skin and muscles for the next challenge. It is the grinding roadwork that makes you run longer and not getting tired during the game. And the hours of thinking, watching and talking basketball and teamwork make our dreams work. If you are happy to plough the land, sow good seed, water it, and weed it, a good harvest will ultimately reward your efforts. But even harvesting is worked before you eat the fruit of your labour and cook and bake all kinds of meals.

First Camp: 11th-15th January 2024

Our first camp was in this spirit to bring together our senior, youth and development players and sweat, play and align ourselves to the perspectives of a new year. 17 participants were a record number of attendance. The participants displayed a great spirit in our court, affectionally called “the cage” and worked hard on skills. This camp also included our Annual General Meeting and membership sign-up. A session on ethics and athlete self-care was integrated in the program. Some players even stayed on to complete their home-work.

Second Camp: 2nd- 4th February 2024

This camp was smaller but nevertheless very fruitful. It included working on our “Vision 24” and an athlete health talk. Players shared their take on Vision 24, how they thought it should be implemented, and their own part in it. Athlete health and clean sport were conditions we agreed on for a successful season. We are on that journey, reaching for a better performance on higher levels. The last year left us disappointed after a great season start, where we occupied position 3 in the robin rounds but failed to win the quarterfinal. Suddenly, our dreams were smashed, and some struggled to swallow this challenge. We want to start and maintain our momentum this year on a different note.

Mental toughness is also one of the things we aspire so that we can manage emotional upsets better preventing that they affect us too much. Skills and strategies were practiced during many court sessions which were led by coach Vostile. Being on this journey together with the players, the executive team of the GBT Mongoose tries to pull the necessary strings. Of course, we still need more funds, but we are grateful for what we have in blessings. We are open to welcoming more people into our coaching and management team to share the load and come up with suggestions for our training becoming more effective.
